From neighbours to global leaders

The mining expertise that comes out of Sudbury is worldwide. And although this expertise is used around the globe, the neighborhood partnerships of mining supply companies that were forged at the industries inception are stronger than ever.

One of these partnerships is that of Mining Technologies International (MTI) and Boart Longyear. Their partnership began when both companies stood side-by-side on Fielding Road in the City of Greater Sudbury and have enjoyed a long-standing relationship since.

“For years we (MTI and Boart Longyear) were neighbours when Boart was just down the street on Fielding Road,” said Moe Denis, Sales Manager of Percussion Products at Boart Longyear.

“When it comes to the people, mining is really not that big of an industry and people get to know each other pretty quickly.”

While getting to know each other, MTI and Boart discovered each other’s strengths and have been able to continue to work together to produce world-class mining equipment.

For their Drilling Services division, Boart Longyear purchases hard rock cylinders from MTI’s North Bay plant. They also use Montabert runners from MTI for their Stope Master Drill.

“I believe that the Canadian team for MTI is pretty diverse and know the needs and niches of the industry,” Denis continued.

“ We (Boart Longyear) fill a different niche market. There is a great interconnection in many ways.”

According to Denis, due to the large mining camps in Sudbury and a high demand for mining supply products, companies learned to work together and share knowledge to produce a high volume of equipment more quickly.

“Of course, everyone wants to do it all in house, but that’s not realistic,” Denis explained. “The realistic thing is for people to work together. One groups works one angle and another works another and we all get together.”

This lateral respect has lead to the growth of both companies over the years. Furthermore, the partnerships between Canadian mining supply companies in general has attributed to their success in the global marketplace as a whole.

I’ve traveled around enough to know that the Canadian team brings forth some of the best expertise in the business,” Denis exclaimed. “Working together is just what makes sense.”
